Afamelanotide is a synthetic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone that acts as a melanocortin 1 receptor agonist. It is used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient to prevent phototoxicity and reduce pain from light exposure in individuals with erythropoietic protoporphyria.
