N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) is an amino acid derivative that functions as a specific agonist at the NMDA receptor, mimicking the action of the neurotransmitter glutamate. It selectively binds only to NMDA receptors and has no effect on other glutamate receptors.
