Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a synthetic chemical historically used as a surfactant in the production of fire-fighting foams and other industrial applications. According to the National Toxicology Program, it can cause cancer, and the Environmental Protection Agency has identified it as a developmental toxicant.
