Hexanoic acid, also known as caproic acid, is a colorless oily liquid with a fatty, cheesy, waxy odor reminiscent of goats or barnyard animals. It is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in animal fats and oils, and contributes to the characteristic smell of decomposing ginkgo seeds.
