Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum, is a hard compound of silicon and carbon that is mass‑produced as a powder and crystals for use as an abrasive. Through sintering, its grains can form very hard ceramics employed in high‑endurance applications such as disc brakes, clutches, and ballistic plates.
