Lubiprostone is a bicyclic fatty acid derived from prostaglandin E1 that activates ClC-2 chloride channels on gastrointestinal epithelial cells, promoting chloride-rich fluid secretion. It is used in the management of idiopathic chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
