Fosbretabulin disodium is the disodium salt of a water-soluble phosphate derivative of a natural stilbenoid phenol derived from the African bush willow (Combretum caffrum). It functions as a prodrug that is dephosphorylated to the active metabolite combretastatin A4, a microtubule-depolymerizing agent that disrupts tumor vasculature, leading to reduced blood flow and ischemic necrosis in tumor tissue.
